Critics have described it as 'Breathtakingly Beautiful' [TimeOut, New York] and 'The Most Shocking and Important Films of the Year' [esquire]. Steve McQueen, a former winner of the Turner Prize recieved the Caméra d'Or (first-time director) Award at Cannes for this piece of cinematic masterpiece.
I saw this film, quite honestly knowing very little of the plot or about the IRA conflicts. Filmography throughout was unlike anything I'd seen before, both painful and beautiful to watch. Such raw emotion, stark senses... in one scene, McQueen introduces the viewer to a non-conformist's cell- exploring the walls, all smeared with faeces. The room itself appeared murky and miserable, it was hard to believe I was looking at a prison cell. The two inmates were forced upon such inhumane measures, one wouldn't even wish a stray dog to be forced upon such harsh conditions.

I have seen this and was absolutely blown away. I swear, that scene where they force him down and cut his hair will haunt me forever!
